Toyota’s Gazoo Racing subdivision has revealed its latest creation, a three-door Yaris hatchback swapped to a hydrogen combustion engine. The car is Rally2-compliant and slated to debut at this year’s Rally Finland coming up in late July.
Finnish company TGR-WRT, a partner of Gazoo Racing, designed and built the Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 H2. The engine it uses combusts hydrogen gas instead of gasoline and produces “nearly zero emissions”, according to the engineering team. The car has already passed its first round of testing.
At the Rally Finland, the hot hatch will perform a single a demo run on a dedicated demo track. It will be driven by four-time WRC champion Juha Kankkunen.
Toyota points out that this project allowed it to reach a new level of understanding alternate energy sources. This wouldn’t be the first time the company experimented with sending a new energy vehicle to a motorsports event, though.
