BMW overhauls its I6 engine lineup adding power and efficiency

The Bavarian automaker has overhauled its powertrain lineup for the 2-, 3- and 4-Series. The 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine in particular has gained power while consuming far less gas than before.

The upgraded mill outputs 392 PS (387 hp / 288 kW) and 540 Nm (398 lb-ft) of torque, surpassing the current version by 18 PS (18 hp / 13 kW) and 40 Nm (30 lb-ft). The electric starter still adds its usual 12 PS (12 hp / 9 kW), but all cars now sprint 0-100 km/h one-tenth of a second faster than before.

An even bigger improvement arguably took place in the fuel economy department. BMW has yet to disclose all the details, but to give an example, the M240i coupe now goes through 8 liters of gas per 100 kilometers in mixed cycle. That’s 29.4 MPG in the United States and 35.3 MPG in the UK.

BMW has also announced other minor changes coming to its entire vehicle lineup. The 2-Series Gran Coupe can now be ordered in a recently added Metallic Green shade. The 4-Series Gran Coupe and the i4 now boast Laser LED taillights in addition to the standard adaptive headlights. The X3 takes advantage of quality rear bench upholstery, and the 5-Series ships with coat hangers on the b-pillars.
