Huawei’s cheapest SUV coming in BEV and REEV flavors

Shangjie, a car brand co-founded between SAIC Group and Huawei in China, has unveiled the preliminary range figures for its first production car – an affordable crossover known as the H5. Once fully fueled and charged, it can cover 1,300 km (807 miles), CarNewsChina claims.

The sales are scheduled for September, but most specifications have already been entered in the Ministry of Industry database. According to them, the vehicle is sized 4,780 x 1,910 x 1,657 mm with 2,840 mm between the axles. It comes with two powertrains to choose between, both restricted to just one electric motor driving one axle. One of these incorporates a 204-PS (201-hp / 150-kW) motor in tandem with an LFP battery pack, while the other one gets 245 PS (242 hp / 180 kW) and a more advanced NMC battery.

Both motors are supplied by SAIC and both batteries by CATL. CLTC-rated range reaches 655 km (407 miles) in the best spec, while the other one remains to be revealed.

Those with range anxiety may consider a range-extender (REEV) version of the Shangjie H5. It combines the 204-PS motor mentioned above with a 1.5-liter petrol engine supplying 98 PS (97 hp / 72 kW) as electricity into the battery on board. That’s a bit on the low side, but rumors claim that this version will be the wallet-friendliest of all, starting from just 145,000 Yuan (U.S. $20,268 at the current conversion rates).

That seems to be in line with Huawei’s brand policy so far. The IT giant has created several new car marques in China already, and Shangjie was announced as the most entry-level among them.
