This vintage Rolls-Royce saloon isn’t as squeaky clean as you’d expect

A 1973 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow converted into a full-fledged off-roading machine is up for grabs in the UK right now. It has a diesel engine, a chassis suited for overlanding and a fairly low asking price.

Hiding underneath the classic body is a chassis of a UK-spec Mitsubishi L200. Rolls-Royce’s 6.75-liter V8 engine tuned for the smoothest possible ride is no longer home, replaced with the truck’s four-cylinder diesel mill and matching transmission. It’s not clear how much power and torque it has, but the listing mentions that an enlarged fuel tank gives this particular Rolls up to 2,000 kilometers (1,242 miles) of range.

Like the donor L200, the car has a rear diff lock and four-wheel drive. It also sits about 30 cm (12 inches) farther from the ground than stock, enabling the use of proper off-road wheels and tires.

Weight is the one concern that we think should be voiced about this project. The Silver Shadow was Rolls’ first unibody vehicle, so transferring it onto a truck platform essentially meant ending up with two chasses in one very heavy machine. That said, the asking price on eBay is mere £19,000. The owner claims the conversion alone took around £30,000.
