Rumor: Honda Prelude to go PHEV in Japan and Europe

According to Carscoops quoting Japanese sources, Honda may release its next-gen Prelude liftback in Type S and Type R flavors, the later packing over 304 PS (300 hp / 224 kW) but no manual transmission.

Honda hasn’t revealed its plans regarding the new Prelude lineup yet, so these are still only rumors. The insiders claim that the Prelude Type R will be offered in Europe, where it will fill the gap left by the outgoing ICE-only Civic Type R. Compared to the hot hatch, the hybrid liftback is expected to be about as powerful but much less polluting. It is also expected to comply with the latest emission standards.

The sources are also claiming that there will be no manual transmission on the list. Instead, Honda will try replacing it with a system called the S+ Shift. It is implemented in the form of paddle shifters under the steering wheel that drivers can use to simulate switching between eight virtual gears.

Other rumored upgrades include a more rigid body structure, upgraded brakes and a stiffer suspension with a wider track and less ground clearance.

The “warmed-up” Prelude Type S is expected to reach the market in the fall of 2026. The “hot” Type R may follow in 2027, according to these reports.
