The 850 Fantom, a motorboat co-designed between Austrian marine vessel specialist Frauscher and sports car maker Porsche, has won the famous Monaco Energy Boat Challenge setting a historical speed record, Porsche reports.
The motorboat managed to accelerate to 49.84 knots, which corresponds to 92.3 km/h or 57.4 mph, on the water. This became possible thanks to an electric powertrain borrowed from the Porsche Macan Turbo. It was de-boosted to “just” 544 PS (536 hp / 400 kW) and plugged into a 100-kWh battery.
Per the certificate, it can accelerate to roughly 49 marine knots, or 91 km/h (56.5 mph). Once fully charged, it can cover 100 km (62 miles) at a low acceleration or around 45 km (28 miles) splashing forward at a breezy 22 knots (41 km/h, or 25.5 mph). The latter is considered its cruising speed.
The hull and the rest of the hardware were borrowed from the 850 Fantom Air speedboat introduced a years ago. The only addition came in the form of a full-fledged cabin capable of accommodating up to seven people. The boat is 8.8 meters (28.9 feet) long, 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) wide and supports four sailing modes called Docking, Range, Sport and Sport Plus. All production is handled by a Frauscher shipyard in Ohlsdorf, Austria, with Porsche supplying the main powertrain parts.
The speedboat competed in the “Open Sea” category of the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge. It is now recognized as the fastest boat of all time to ever enter the competition.
