Scary-fast VW Type II restomod can be yours for $80k

A one-off Volkswagen Type II, known in the United States simply as the Volkswagen Bus, will cross the auction block at the Monterey Car Week in mid-August. What used to be a retro minibus from the 1960s received an engine swap and now commands 567 PS (560 hp / 417 kW), which is about ten times as much as the original had.

The restomod rides on a custom-fabricated chassis and staggered wheels installed in 17 inches at the front and 18 at the back. A three-speed automatic transmission carries the torque to the rear axle. For the 8.34-liter V8 to breathe more freely, it received air vents and quarter panels extended by roughly 16 cm (6 inches).

A wooden steering wheel, Porsche 914 seats, hand-crafted consoles and a modern-yet-analog gauge cluster rounded off the stylish project. With 11,577 km (7,194 miles) under its belt, this VW Bus should be a hoot to drive.

There is no mention of the pricing, but the same vehicle went up on sale earlier this year for an asking price barely under $80,000. A similar amount buys you an electric ID. Buzz, but arguably not the vintage charms of this one-off creation.
