Ultra-rare McLaren F1 GTR goes on sale for ~$20M

RM Sotheby’s has listed an exceptionally desirable 1997 McLaren F1 GTR for sale. Originally a racecar, it had a turbulent past and was ultimately rebuilt for the public roads while retaining its famous BMW V12.

Only 28 such vehicles were made in total. This one was commissioned by financier David Morrison in the UK and driven by Chris Goodwin in the FIA GT Championship of 1997. Goodwin then proceeded to become McLaren’s consulting driver in supercar development. In the same year, the car competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the four-hour endurance races at Silverstone and Nürburgring.

In 1998, the F1 GTR landed in the hands of the infamous James Munroe. Soon afterwards, the financier and car collector was found guilty of grand embezzlement, and his car went under the hammer. It proceeded to change multiple owners and landed at Lanzante at one point to become street-legal. We don’t have the full details of the conversion, but we do know that it still clings to its authentic BMW V12 and is in great condition following a complete rebuild.

This isn’t the first or the only F1 GTR that the Lanzante team brought on the road – the video above features another fine example from that tuner. Just a few months ago, a similar vehicle changed hands for U.S. $25.3 million. This one is being estimated at between $18 and 21 million.
