Best Car claims that Toyota plans to expand its new Land Cruiser FJ lineup with a 2.8-liter, four-cylinder turbo diesel version. The same engine is already available for the Toyota Hilux, Fortuner and other vehicles based on the IMV platform.
The new FJ was announced in the fall of 2025. It is currently being made in Thailand and mainly exported to India, with sales in Japan slated to begin in late spring (see video). The SUV is frame-based and comes equipped with an admittedly rather lackluster 2.7-liter petrol engine capable of 163 PS (161 hp / 121 kW) and 246 Nm (181 lb-ft) of torque.
In contrast, the new diesel spec will deliver a more robust 204 PS (201 hp / 150 kW) along with 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque, the sources claim. It will allegedly retain the original’s six-speed automatic transmission and part-time AWD.
As appealing as a more capable Land Cruiser FJ may sound, Best Car believes it won’t be arriving until 2029.
