Caterham stays committed to electrification, confirms Project V plans

The British niche sports car maker announced an intention to go all-in on EVs a few years ago with a concept named Project V (see video). We half-expected it to back out of that promise considering the current market conditions, but it now turned out that the car had been nearing the premiere all along.

Specifically, a road-worthy prototype will make its debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon in early January, Caterham says. Unofficial sources add that it runs on Yamaha powertrain components and battery cells supplied by Taiwan-based firm Xing Mobility.

The company refused to provide any new details but assured us that the “Caterham DNA” is very much alive in this new car. To us, this sounds like a promise of a lightweight and agile coupe that’s fun to throw into corners, but that’s just our take on it.

Back when the Project V was first announced in the summer of 2023, it had 272 PS (268 hp / 200 kW) at its disposal, could sprint to highway speed in 4.5 seconds and covered up to 402 km (250 miles) on a charge. Those numbers were all manufacturer’s estimates, so they were liable to change over the years that have passed.

As to when to expect this new Caterham on the streets, the company said that road tests would continue through the entire next year, so we wouldn’t bet on any earlier than 2027.
