All-electric Mercedes-AMG GT touches down as a 1,169-PS, hi-tech hypercar

The long-anticipated AMG GT 4-Door Coupe is finally here. It sprints 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 2.1 seconds and regains 560 kilometers (348 miles) of range in 10 minutes. Production starts in Germany this summer, with preorders expected to open any day now.

One of the hypercar’s most fascinating technological advancements comes in the form of the so-called “axial flux motors” designed by a UK-based firm, Yasa. Two motors drive the rear wheels at all times, while a single front e-motor can disengage from the wheels to save power.

In the starting GT 55 spec, the luxury ride sends 816 PS (805 hp / 600 kW) to the asphalt while exerting up to 1,800 Nm (1,328 lb-ft) of torque. The flagship GT 63 spec makes 1,169 PS (1,153 hp / 860 kW) and 2,000 Nm (1,475 lb-ft) of torque.

This allows the GT 63 to hit its first hundred in the 2.1 seconds mentioned above, double that acceleration in as little as 6.4 seconds, and eventually climb all the way to 300 km/h (186 mph) – not bad for an EV.

The battery pack deserves a special mention. Composed from particularly slim cylindrical nickel-manganese-cobalt-aluminum cells, it can hold up to 106 kWh and charge from sources rated up to 600 kW. AMG points out its relatively low weight and rapid cooling even compared to other modern designs.

Other noteworthy features include intelligent multi-link suspension, seven driving presets, a highly elaborate fake V8 soundtrack (optional), and an active aero kit. The interior looks rather unusual, but AMG assures us that it’s because it is “as driver-focused as possible.” Despite an abundance of touchscreens, it leaves some space for actual physical buttons and rotary knobs, something many drivers will know to appreciate.
