Tesla Roadster Demonstrated With Flight Capabilities

Tesla recently showcased a new Roadster model, demonstrating features such as vertical ramp ascent, mid-air maneuvers, and a claimed 0-60 mph acceleration in 0.81 seconds. The demonstration included the vehicle driving off a ramp, using thrusters to flip and land, and performing a barrel roll over other Tesla models.

This new Roadster, presented simply as "Roadster," differs in design from a 2017 concept, featuring a more angular aesthetic. Technical details provided by Tesla include steer-by-wire, brake-by-wire, and throttle-by-wire systems. The vehicle also incorporates an adjustable rear spoiler with high and low downforce modes.

The Roadster's aerial capabilities are attributed to a collaboration with SpaceX, utilizing 10 cold-gas thrusters and two 600-liter ultra-high-pressure air tanks. These thrusters reportedly enable the mid-air maneuvers and contribute to the rapid acceleration. However, the showcased vehicle was a concept, with production reportedly slated to begin in 2028.

Tesla's website indicates three potential trims: Performance, Thrust, and Rocket. The Thrust trim is associated with the sub-1-second 0-60 mph time. The Rocket trim, described as a single-seat version with flight capabilities, is available by invitation only.
