Porsche Could Develop Supercar With Flat-Eight Engine

Porsche is reportedly developing a new gas-powered supercar, potentially featuring a flat-eight engine. This development follows a shift in the company's electrification strategy, which previously aimed for an entirely electric lineup. The new supercar could become the top model in Porsche's range.

The company had previously showcased the electric Mission X concept in 2023, with a production version hinted for late 2024 or early 2025. However, the production of the Mission X did not materialize, possibly due to Porsche's revised electric vehicle strategy.

Reports suggest the new supercar could utilize a flat-eight engine, which would be a first for a production Porsche road car. Porsche previously developed a twin-turbocharged 5.0-liter flat-eight concept engine in 2023, producing 750 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque, paired with a manual transmission. This engine was not used in a production car at the time. The new supercar might also use a platform from within the Volkswagen Group, with one report suggesting the Audi Nuvolari platform, a reworked version of the Lamborghini Temerario's architecture.

Internally, the project is reportedly codenamed "S1." The design could draw inspiration from the Mission X concept, which featured forward-and-upward opening doors, vertical headlights, and large air intakes. The concept also had a glass canopy, bucket seats, and an F1-inspired steering wheel. The Mission X concept was shorter and wider than the 918 Spyder, with a similar wheelbase. Production of the new supercar is expected to be limited, and it could be priced around $500,000 or more. A potential reveal could occur in 2027.
