Nissan’s once-bestselling Altima saloon has declined rather sharply over the past several years, so it’s not surprising that the company is now discontinuing it. An electric replacement was reportedly in the works, but we hear it’s been canceled.
In January–June 2026, only around 42,300 Altima units were sold in the United States. The year-on-year decline amounted to 31.9%. Considering the past six years, the sales of the model fell off by a factor of nearly 2.5.
Back in 2023, Nissan took the axe to another relatively affordable sedan, the Maxima. The company had intended to replace both with EVs – even specifically sedan-shaped ones, representatives said – but accumulating debt and uncertain state of the market forced it to postpone those plans indefinitely.
In June, Nissan abandoned the development of an all-electric Qashqai crossover citing similar reasons.
