A couple of weeks ago, Porsche created some ripples in the automotive world by introducing a unique coupe called the 911 Flachbau RS (see video). It was inspired by the Slantnose race car from the early 1980s and unveiled as a one-off bespoke vehicle for a V.I.P. client. As it now turns out, the “one-off” status may not hold for much longer.
According to The Drive quoting Alexander Fabig, head of Porsche’s Sonderwunsch customization department, producing more Flachbau cars wouldn’t be out of question. The company already has a history of such bespoke orders. For example, if someone were to commission the Sonderwunsch division for a custom paint on a 911, the designers would spend weeks or months developing and then testing the option.
It would then be provided to the client only to become a regular catalog option in a year or so. The reasoning is that the owner of the car still gets to enjoy a year of exclusivity, while Porsche gets to win its R&D money back in the end.
It’s still unknown whether any more Flachbau RS coupes will be made. It's definitely possible, according to Fabig, but will depend on things like demand and viability.
The replica that debuted in mid-August required the collaborative effort of at least four German firms, including famous body kit vendor Manthey Racing. Working with a 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS, the team gave it a gently sloped nose, an eye-catching livery and a 3.8-liter flat-six engine turbocharged to 700 PS (690 hp / 515 kW). No pricing details were mentioned.
